Food: True Flavors
True Flavors Diner and Catering
True Flavors Diner is a charming black-owned restaurant in Durham, NC. I discovered this neat little diner a few years ago. One weekend my family was headed out to eat when my son mentioned he was craving chicken and waffles.
Having tried to get into Dames Chicken and Waffles in Durham unsuccessfully several times before (they now have a Cary location and it’s not as crowded), we knew not to even bother. The wait times are typically so long and an advance reservation is advised.
After a quick Google search, I came across True Flavors. I was thrilled to see they had a black chef and they were black-owned. We were definitely giving this place a try. As a local small business co-owner, my family loves to support other small businesses. And we especially love to support other small, black-owned businesses.
Once we arrived, there was a short wait but we’d driven almost an hour to get there, so we waited. We were not disappointed!
After noticing many other patrons had the chicken and waffles, we ended up ordering the chicken and waffles. However, to keep us all from having the exact same dish, my husband order the blueberry waffles and chicken option.
The portion sizes were more than enough; none of us finished our food. Even my athletic teen son, who typically orders two entrees, was full before eating all his food. The food was fresh and flavorful.
The menu included several other appetizing options. In addition, I noticed several delectable looking dessert options near the store window. I knew I would be back to try some of their other dishes.
This diner has become a family favorite and one I’ve recommended to others.
